The course takes its cue from the experience of the Emilian master photographer presented in the exhibition Luigi Ghirri e Modena. Un viaggio a ritroso, to focus on representation of the landscape.  Participants will learn to approach the landscape through photography and observe it in a critical and personal way.

By building a story with images, participants will reflect together on how spaces and things can prompt the imagination, giving a personal and different vision of the world around us.

Fotografo e docente, nel 2020 è tra i 10 fotografi italiani selezionati dalla Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea (DGCC) del Ministero della Cultura in collaborazione con il Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea e Triennale Milano per realizzare un racconto corale delle architetture contemporanee in Italia. 

What you will learn

  • to build a coherent and effective story through images

  • to observe the little things around you more carefully and give back an intimate and personal vision of them

  • to know and master depth of field and photographic composition

  • to correctly assess the influence of lens choice in perceiving the depicted landscape

  • to use editing techniques applied to landscape photography

What you will need

  • photographic equipment: digital or film camera (35 mm or medium format)

  • tripod (not compulsory)

  • comfortable shoes and light backpacks

  • to be willing to have a go

  • a car for the photography field trips of Saturday 15 and Saturday 22 October. Alternatively, lifts can be arranged with the other course participants.

Programme

Between lessons, you can take your photographic research further through targeted exercise.

Guided tour of the exhibition Luigi Ghirri e Modena. Un viaggio a ritroso and explanation/introductory lesson – with Daniele De Luigi. Short introduction to the course and presentation of the teacher, definition of the project, themes and organization of the photography field trips.

Photography field trip: Modena’s streets and city centre

Practical exercises: natural frames and borders, relating to architecture
